Which climbing rope should you buy?

The Escapades buying guide

Which climbing rope should you buy?

Compare the Tendon and DMM ropes listed by Escapades by experience level, diameter, rope system, treatment or construction and intended use—from confidence-inspiring first single ropes to lightweight alpine half/twin ropes and professional EN 1891 Type A low-stretch lines.

Important rope-type safety note: For lead climbing, use a dynamic rope certified and configured for the intended climbing system. The static/semi-static and EN 1891 low-stretch ropes in this guide are for specialist applications such as rope access, caving, rigging or controlled abseiling; they are not substitutes for dynamic lead-climbing ropes. The DMM Worksafe additions are all Type A low-stretch ropes and are not designed to arrest leader falls. Always check rope diameter/type against your belay or descent device's approved range and follow the equipment manufacturers' instructions.

Quick picks

Choosing by experience

Beginner: prioritise a manageable single rope around 9.7–9.8 mm. The extra diameter generally gives a confidence-inspiring feel and strong durability.

Intermediate: move toward 9.4–9.7 mm if you want lower weight and smoother clipping, or learn half/twin systems for trad and multipitch.

Advanced: 8.9 mm triple-rated and 7.6–7.8 mm half/twin ropes save significant weight but require appropriate devices, experience and careful rope management.

Standard or Complete Shield?

Standard: best value for predominantly indoor use and fair-weather cragging.

Complete Shield: treatment of sheath and core aimed at improved water and dirt resistance—worth considering for regular outdoor, trad, alpine and winter use.

TeFIX: adds permanent core/sheath bonding on the Master 7.8, targeting durability and zero sheath slippage.

Choosing a DMM low-stretch rope

10 mm / 66 g/m: the lightest and lowest-bulk Worksafe Plus option; confirm that every rope grab, descender and connector in the system accepts 10 mm rope.

10.5 mm / 72 g/m: the middle ground for professional users wanting balanced handling, weight and durability.

11 mm / 75 g/m: the most substantial handling option, with Worksafe Plus aimed at heavier wear and the standard Worksafe at balanced all-round use.

Worksafe Plus: uses a tighter woven sheath than Worksafe to increase abrasion and wear resistance.

What rope diameter should you choose?

  • 9.7–9.8 mm single ropes: the safest starting point for most buyers—durable, confidence-inspiring and widely compatible, subject to your device specification.
  • 9.4 mm single ropes: a lighter all-round choice for climbers who already have solid belaying and rope-management habits.
  • 8.9 mm triple-rated: a high-performance specialist rope; device compatibility and experienced handling matter more as diameter drops.
  • 8.5 mm half/twin ropes: durable mountain systems that favour longevity and handling over minimum pack weight.
  • 7.6–7.8 mm half/twin ropes: advanced alpine ropes where low weight is the priority.
  • 10.0 mm specialist low-stretch: the lightest DMM Worksafe Plus option at 66 g/m, while the Tendon Speleo 10.0 serves a different caving-focused role. Confirm exact device and system compatibility.
  • 10.5 mm specialist low-stretch: a balanced professional diameter. DMM Worksafe Plus 10.5 is 72 g/m; Tendon Static 10.5 and Static Contra 10.5 target their own access and high-wear applications.
  • 11 mm Type A low-stretch: the most substantial DMM options here at 75 g/m. Choose Worksafe Plus for its tighter-woven sheath or Worksafe for balanced 32-strand all-round handling.
  • All low-stretch ropes: use them only in the specified access, positioning, restraint, rescue, caving, rigging or descent system—never as substitutes for dynamic leader-fall ropes.
