The braided core is what makes the difference: it resists the flattening that makes a worn wall rope feel dead in a belay device, so the 9.8i keeps feeding smoothly for longer. TANDEM sheath braiding packs extra fibre density into the sheath for safer fall-catching, even at this slimmer 9.8mm diameter, and the slim profile runs easily through the belay devices found at most walls.
